General Operating Support/ Project Grants

The Union Square Awards Grants Programs for award recipients aim to strengthen social justice and arts organizations serving New York City communities. Grants are made in the amount of $25,000 per year and also includes continued access to technical assistance opportunities throughout the grant term.

The 2012 General Operating Support (GOS) program made two-year grants to twenty (20) prior Award recipients to sustain and expand efforts that respond to the needs of low income communities.

The 2012 grantees are the final GOS program recipients.

Renewal Grants

The Union Square Awards issued Renewal grants for the first time in 2009. Responding to grantees' needs during the economic downturn, the program ensures that critical community work is supported. Eligible grantees that have successfully completed their grant term receive information and guidelines by mail. The 2012 Renewals program distributed $25,000 grants to 12 social justice and 11 arts organizations for a total of $575,000.

No further renewal grants will be made.

Special Achievement

The 10th year of the founding of the Union Square Awards was an opportune moment to give special recognition to the achievements of past recipients. Awardees continue to engage in exceptional work at the forefront of the social justice community and distinguished themselves locally, nationally and internationally, building organizations that mobilize new communities and revitalize civic engagement.

Mini Grants

Launched in 2005, the Union Square Awards’ mini grants program assists grantees with short-term projects that build organizational capacity and are linked to ongoing work. Mini-grants range up to $2,000.
