Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP) promotes leadership, service and activism among young women. Founded in 2001, SNLP provides low-income young women, ages 14 to 19 from New York City public schools, a comprehensive program of academic and hands-on experiences that challenge conventional ideas about leadership. Designed to empower and equip them as agents for change, the program offers a dynamic and intensive learning experience through academic coursework, role-modeling, service-based learning and independent social justice projects. By creating decision-making opportunities for young women, SNLP is “redefining the nature of leadership” it today’s world.
SNLP’s programs are progressive and multi-dimensional. An intensive introductory summer institute offers young women the opportunity to explore the leadership and that of others in a respectful community of peep and intergenerational relationships. It focuses on the forces that lead to equality and justice, and the connections between identity, power and privilege in this society. After the institute, young women advance into paid community-base internships to observe leadership “in action.” These experiences culminate in community projects that each young women may also take advanced courses that explore leadership development from academic, practical, and health-related perspectives.
