La Unión de la Comunidad Latina
Artemio Guerra, Leticia Alanis, Elizabeth Mendoza & Gerardo Cacique, Co-Founding Members
La Unión is committed to advancing economic and social justice for new Latino immigrants living in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This member-directed community organization mobilizes, empowers ad builds leadership among Latino immigrants to improve living and working conditions. Members are primarily immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries.
La Unión provides direct services, advocacy and organizing. A Worker’s Committee seeks decent working conditions and workplace compliance with labor law. A Health Committee works to change negative environmental and health policies. Concerned with high remittance fees, La Unión has joined with several other organizations seeking fairer exchange rates and reinvestment into immigrant communities. Its Western Union Campaign calls on the company to donate $1 for every remittance transaction to a fund to be used for development projects in immigrant communities and their home countries.
