Imani House, Inc. (IHI) was born out of the dedication and drive of the founder and director, Bisi Iderrabdullah, to assist individuals to make positive change in their lives and communities while actively working to destroy institutional injustice, bias and poverty. IHI was started in Liberia in 1985 in response to a need for women’s empowerment, economics and a greater voice in civil society. Five year later, IHI was incorporated as a non-profit in Brooklyn based on the similar conditions that the founders identified as seriously limiting the progress of people in poverty.
IHI Brooklyn actively provides essential services and is a multi-purpose center engaged In all facets of individual and community development. The organization focuses on making all community members accountable to improving their lives and surroundings. IHI trains volunteers from diverse backgrounds to perform most of the services. They focus on individual strengths and advocate on behalf of low-income youth, adults and immigrants while offering direct service programs that meet immediate needs. All programs are free and include a food pantry, adult literacy, youth martial arts and after-school programs, teen leadership, HIV/AIDS education, bias and violence prevention and other support services.
