The Union Square Awards Grants Programs for award recipients aim to strengthen social justice and arts organizations serving New York City communities. Grants are made in the amount of $25,000 per year and also includes continued access to technical assistance opportunities throughout the grant term.

The 2012 General Operating Support (GOS) program made two-year grants to twenty (20) prior Award recipients to sustain and expand efforts that respond to the needs of low income communities.

The 2012 grantees are the final GOS program recipients.

 



 

SOCIAL JUSTICE GRANTEES

Adhikaar for Social Justice To expand the Nepali Workers' Rights program and build the Health, Safety, and Dignity campaign for nail salon workers.

Brandworkers International To expand legal, advocacy and organizing programs serving food-industry workers.

Bushwich Housing Independence Project To support housing education, tenant support programs, and counseling services in Brooklyn.

CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities To support the Chinatown Tenants Union ongoing activities and Asian Youth in Action trainings.

Common Law To support housing legal-clinics and leadership trainings.

Girls for Gender Equity (GGE) To expand the Coalition for Gender Equity in Schools and Title IX Leadership Training Institute.

Mentoring in Medicine (MIM) To expand the Medical Pathways Program and serve additional students.

Queens Congregations United for Action (QCUA) To support campaigns and expand the Economic Opportunities for All trainings.

Queers for Economic Justice To support QEJ core activities and expand the Shelter Safety Campaign.

Sadie Nash Leadership Project To support leadership programs for young women and expand outreach.

Turning Point for Women and Families To support Turning Point's core programs, expand services to children, and grow the Arise NY! anti-Muslim bullying campaign.

VOCAL New York To support membership, leadership development, and public education programs for New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS.

Voces Latinas To expand peer-advocate training and outreach programs that support immigrant Latinas living with or at risk for HIV and violence in Queens.

Voices UnBroken To support ongoing workshops and training programs; and to develop an expansion plan that responds to shifts in the juvenile justice system.

 


 

ARTS GRANTEES

Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance (BAAD!) To support BAAD!’s year-long programs  and  artists’ residencies.

Haiti Cultural Exchange (HCX) To expand school- and community-based programs for the Haitian-American community.

Hester Street Collaborative To support ongoing community design, arts education, and advocacy programs and workshops.

Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture Without Borders To support annual celebrations, programs and classes; and to help launch the language awareness project.

Maysles Institute To support educational programs, curriculum and web development, and community outreach

People's Theatre Project To expand the VOICES youth theater program and expand staff capacity.
