The Union Square Awards issued Renewal grants for the first time in 2009. Responding to grantees' needs during the economic downturn, the program ensures that critical community work is supported. Eligible grantees that have successfully completed their grant term receive information and guidelines by mail. The 2012 Renewals program distributed $25,000 grants to 12 social justice and 11 arts organizations for a total of $575,000.
No further renewal grants will be made.
A description of the grant purpose for each recipient follows:
2012 Social Justice Renewal Grantees
Chhaya CDC’s Renewal grant continues support for organizing, advocacy, foreclosure prevention, and membership development programs.
Damayan Migrant Workers Association will use its Renewal grant to continue leadership, health, and educational programs; as well as support for campaigns that aim to end the trafficking of domestic workers.
The Renewal grant to Families for Freedom will be used to expand education and leadership programs, and strengthen campaign work.
FIERCE!’s Renewal grant provides continued support for their leadership training program, recruitment activities, and campaign work.
Mirabal Sisters Cultural & Community Center will use their 2012 Renewal grant to continue support for ongoing tenants’ rights and education work, and to provide staff and member leadership training.
NICE's Renewals grant will be used to continue support for advocacy and organizing work, with emphasis on immigrant consumer justice, workers’ rights, and comprehensive immigration reform campaigns.
Picture the Homeless will use their 2012 Renewal grant for expansion of an individual donor program and database development.
Their 2012 Renewal grant will help South Asian Council for Social Services continue providing support for mental health and education programs and develop strategic alliances.
Sylvia Rivera Law Project’s Renewal grant will help expand their legal drop-in clinics and advocacy trainings.
UPROSE's Renewal grant will help continue their youth leadership trainings, environmental justice bus tours, and ongoing campaigns.
Washington Heights CORNER Project will use their 2012 Renewal grant to maintain health services, strengthen their Women’s Wellness Initiative, and help serve additional clients.
The Renewal grant to Youth Represent will be used to continue legal services, expand the type of services provided, and increase the number of clients served.
2012 Arts Renewal Grantees
Center for Urban Pedagogy’s Renewal grant will help strengthen arts programs for youth by supporting the development and distribution of educational and organizing toolkits.
Diversity in Arts and Nations for Cultural Education’s 2012 Renewal grant will aid in expanding folk dance programs for youth; and in continuing performances and lecture demonstrations in Queens and the Bronx.
Girls Write Now’s Renewal grant will be used to support core programs, increase College Bound participation, and pilot digital offerings.
Groove With Me’s Renewal grant continues support for their Teen Leadership Committee (TLC) and ongoing dance programs.
The 2012 Renewal grant will be used to support The Laundromat Project’s core programs and strengthen organizational staffing and leadership.
Multicultural Music Group will use their Renewal grant to support core music instruction, expand outreach to new public schools, and strengthen grant management systems.
NoMAA’s Renewal grant will be used to support core programs and help launch the Uptown Arts Consortium (UAC), a network offering arts opportunities at rotating venues throughout Upper Manhattan.
Opening Act’s Renewal grant will aid in expanding the Saturday Master Class series and Student Leadership Council.
Renaissance EMS’ Renewal grant will provide support for core music programs and to expand offerings at the REMS center to six days a week.
Urban Word NYC’s Renewal grant will be used to support writing workshops, residencies, and professional development programs.
Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls will use their 2012 Renewal grant to support and expand after-school music and mentoring programs for young women, and maintain drop-in center resources.
